An exciting trip to Cologne (Germany) to present a master class to hundreds of professional photographers from the Bund Photographie Professional. I love new challenges, interesting experiences and stepping out my comfort zone. Presenting to a audience of non-english speakers was one of these new experiences and working with Heinrich my translator made it a pleasure. It was also great to hear a compliments from a couple of the bilingual attendee made me feel very happy about my approach which was that “due to the delivery style, the key messages were not lost in translation”
The Master class I delivered talked about my roles as a beauty, portrait and fashion photographer, covering:
– my portfolio
– how I light my work
– how I build a fashion shoot
– putting together a creative and enthusiastic team
– my approach to lighting
I simplified my lighting techniques for the Masterclass down to one decision, which was choosing to use hard, soft or diffused lighting.Taking into consideration the style of colours required, the level of detail in the shadow areas and how much contrast is required in the final photograph.

The final part of the day was step by step explanation to my expert lighting setups to show how to control the visible texture in the skin and how to use light to control the shadows. Setting up each light individually, I described its purpose and demonstrated the effect on the model. When all the lights were set up I then spent a couple of minutes shooting live as part of the masterclass. I have posted below three different shots that demonstrate the different effects that can be achieved using the same three modifiers.

Das Praxisseminar zum Thema Lichttechnik mit Richard Mayfield FBIPP (GB). Obwohl alle Convention Teilnehmer schon teilweise recht müde schienen-waren doch alle völlig begeistert von diesem jungen, englischen Fotografen. Thank you Richard for this brilliant seminar!! 🙂
(CONVENTION concluded 2013 …und with the best in the Montagnachmittag-the practical seminar on the subject of lighting technology with Richard Mayfield FBIPP (GB). Although all Convention participants seemed quite some tired – but all were completely amazed by this young, English photographer. Thank you Richard for this brilliant seminar! 🙂 )

It was very welcoming to receive such a warm response and positive comments. Michael and the BPP members showed there appreciation for my time, energy and effort by presenting me with a book. This showcased all the members photography who had achieved their International Photography Qualifications. The quality of photography in this book is wonderful and is a real testament to the BPP members, the committee and to the Chairman of the IPQ committee Henk Van Hooten, who was also a pleasure to meet at the event.
